On the evening of Sunday 26th April, Vocations Sunday, over three hundred people from the Diocese and beyond gathered in Saint Eugene’s Cathedral to mark the Year of Consecrated Life. This was a significant moment for on this day the names of those in consecrated life who originally come from the diocese and who minister in the diocese in other parts of the world were displayed in the Cathedral. Parishes were asked to submit the names to be recorded in a diocesan register.
Launching a Celebration of Flowers in thanksgiving for those in consecrated life, the evening began with a celebration of sung Vespers, presided over by Father Paul McCafferty, Vicar General of the Diocese of Derry. Psalms, songs and intercessory prayers expressed thanksgiving and praise for the Gift of God among us and all who have lived and gave expression to the Charism of each commitment. At the end of Evening Prayer, those gathered were invited to make their pilgrim journey to admire the various floral displays around the Cathedral, beginning at the baptismal font. Each arrangement was a place to connect with others to share their stories.
